                             Treatment Philosophy

"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."

Eleanor Roosevelt

My treatment approach is based on the use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, and Narrative Therapy.  I separate the individual from their eating disorder behaviors and strive to express a supportive and nurturing environment that engenders a safe, trusting relationship between therapist and client.

My approach is built on two main tenets.  First, clients should understand that it is not my goal to change their points of view but instead examine the driving force underlying their thoughts and actions.  Second, we will work together in a partnership to define problems and set realistic goals.  This philosophy sets the stage for a "win-win" relationship.

Success of treatment depends on a healthy balance between mind and body where intrusive and distorted thoughts no longer dictate one's eating behaviors (e.g., restrictive/binge eating) or adopted rituals (purging, over-exercising, use of diuretics/laxatives, diet rules, continual weighing, etc.).  Consequently overwhelming thoughts about food, exercise, weight and control will begin to dissipate facilitating greater insight in relationships, healthy communication patterns, and new-found attitudes throughout the recovery process.
